About The Painting
My guiding question for all of my Sustained Investigation pieces is: How can I represent my family history and integrate myself as a child into the family memories that happened before my time? Lost In Family Memories is the center piece of my portfolio and really embodies the true meaning of what my guiding question is exploring. The background of this painting is in front of the barn at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin, Tennessee. Harlinsdale Farm was founded by my great great grandfather, W.W. Harlin in 1933. My grandmother grew up on this farm and even my mother has fond memories of going to visit her grandparents, Margaret and Tom Harlin, and playing in that barn with her cousins as a kid. In 2004, my great grandfather, Tom Harlin, decided to sell the farm to The City of Franklin, Tennessee. The farm was sold before I was born, before I got to experience any of my moms favorite memories as a child. For this painting, I wanted to paint myself into the scene behind me at Harlinsdale. I used value and color to show the longing emotion that I am expressing in the painting. My emotion is representing the longing feeling to experience the memories that happened before I was born.
